bathroom humor (2022)

"Bathroom Humor" is a short comedic film I made in the final months of 2022. When a bathroom attendant named Man Ray starts performing standup comedy in the restroom, a local news station sends in a slacker camera crew to investigate. My film is the resultant news segment produced by the camera crew, particularly by the apathetic character "Camera Operator.” In this unconventional mockumentary, I hoped to explore the interrelation between economic anxiety and comic relief, and the different approaches people assume towards creative pursuits.

I was inspired by 1980's public access TV, the Conceptual artists of the 1960's, and the deadpan humor of the comic Steven Wright. Because I wanted the film to be reminiscent of 80's public access programming, I decided to shoot it on miniDV tapes, use a 4:3 ratio, and incorporate late 80's aesthetics into the set design, even while referencing 2022 cultural issues.
