love from gyeongnidan-gil

Gyeongnidan-gil is a street in the neighborhood of Haebangchon in the Itaewon district of Seoul, and home base to many American expatriates. As a Korean-American who lived in Seoul for a few years, I discovered I would feel an unfathomably loud sense of belonging and home whenever I walked down this street.

In this series, I photographed my friend Blue on Gyeongnidan-gil, as we explore different facets of Korean-American femininity.

As we took these photos, Blue and I chatted about how something as amorphous as Korean-American identity can feel so vividly concrete and graspable at times. It’s interesting, the microneighborhoods of a global diaspora’s capital cities, and the cultural work they do in developing ultra-specific senses of belonging.
